The gas jet controls the rate at which the gas is delivered to the burner. Gas jets designed for smaller-sized hob rings have small holes; those for larger hob rings have larger holes.

Cooking gas comes in two forms: bottled butane/propane and natural gas, which is the gas used in domestic gas mains.

If you need to switch from one gas type to another for any reason, such as from bottled gas to mains gas for example, it's absolutely essential that you change the gas jets.
