The drain filter on my washing machine is blocked

Your washing machine’s drain filter is a small, unobtrusive but essential piece of kit. It stops debris and stray objects from getting into the drain pump. However, sometimes it can get blocked itself, causing a bit of a hassle for your machine (and for you, too). Don’t panic! Let’s go through the possible causes of this problem and the solutions for unblocking it.
THE CAUSES OF THIS FAULT:
WARNING
Before carrying out any work on your appliance, please ensure that it is disconnected from the mains.
Risk of electric shock.
Make sure you wear suitable gloves.
Risk of cuts.
An object stuck in the filter
It is common for an object such as a a coin, a hairpin or even a button gets stuck in the filter. These items block access to the filter, making it difficult to clean. Always unplug your washing machine before carrying out any work! Using a pair of pliers, try to gently unblock the filter. Avoid using excessive force so as not to damage it. If the filter remains stuck, remove the drain pump by disconnecting the hose connecting the drum to the pump. This will allow you to check whether an object is blocking the mechanism.

Limescale build-up around the filter
Hard water can cause build-up of limescale around the drain filter, making it almost impossible to open. This problem is particularly common if the washing machine has not been maintained regularly. If the filter is slightly blocked, use a pair of pliers to gently pry it open. However, if it cannot be opened, remove the drain pump completely, including the filter housing. Then prepare a mixture of hot water and citric acid, and pour it directly into the filter housing. Leave it to work for a few hours to dissolve the limescale effectively.
